When do I need to apply for Medicare Part A & B?

If you're turning 65 and:

  • You are currently covered through an employer plan, and the employer has less than 20 employees;
  • You currently have individual coverage through the New York State of Health, COBRA or Direct Coverage;
  • Or you plan to retire;

You will need to apply for Medicare Part A & B.  Medicare Part A & B must be in place by your 65th birthday month.  There may be other situations that are not listed above, where you will also need to apply for Medicare Part A & B, without regard to employer size.  You should always consult with your Human Resources Personnel, or call my office for a private consultation.
